Edwin Markham Home
San Jose, Santa Clara County · California
The house stands in History Park, moved here from South Eighth Street in 1987 and now the home of Poetry Center San José. Nothing cast marks it. The state registered it in 1949 because Markham wrote The Man with the Hoe here, which he did not: he had left as a graduate in 1872 and was a school principal in Oakland when he wrote it in 1898. The printed panel beside the house declines the claim. A 1937 plaque still stands at the old lot and says the house is at the rear.
