DeValls Bluff in the Civil War
DeValls Bluff, Prairie County · Arkansas
Erected 2010
Fort Lincoln was drawn up after a Confederate raid. Following Shelby's capture of the hay camps at Ashley's Station on August 24, 1864, Captain Junius Wheeler, Steele's chief engineer, planned three redoubts anchored on a bend of the White River, and General Christopher Andrews oversaw the work. The 57th U.S. Infantry, a Black regiment, built the last and heaviest earthwork, and Andrews reported that the name pleased the men and made them shovel faster. Only the southernmost redoubt survives, on private land, and an effort to make it a Civil War park did not succeed.
