The state put this town's discarded nicknames in cast quotation marks. Ione, the bronze says, was once known as Bed-Bug and Freeze-Out, which is an unusual thing for a landmark to record and a worse thing to have been called. Daniel Stewart built the store in 1856 out of Muletown brick fired nearby, the first brick building in the valley, standing on the road that carried everything else up to the Mother Lode and the southern mines.

DANIEL STEWART CO. STORE GENERAL MERCHANDISE STORE BUILT BY DANIEL STEWART IN 1856. FIRST BRICK BUILDING ERECTED IN IONE VALLEY FROM NEARBY MULETOWN BRICK. IONE, ONCE KNOWN AS "BED-BUG" AND "FREEZE-OUT" WAS AN IMPORTANT SUPPLY CENTER ON THE MAIN ROAD TO THE MOTHER LODE AND SOUTHERN MINES.
