Creuzbaur's Battery, C.S.A. "The Big Guns of Fayette"
Schulenburg, Fayette County · Texas
Erected 1965
Creuzbauer's battery, Company A of the Fifth Texas Field Artillery, was mostly German immigrants. It spent 1863 guarding the Rio Grande valley before being called back to refit with larger guns. The new weapons never came, and the dispute over them and over his ability as a commander led Creuzbauer to submit his resignation on March 31, 1864. While it was still under review he was ordered to Sabine Pass, and on May 6 his guns joined the attack at Calcasieu Pass that captured the Union gunboats Granite City and Wave. He then went back to farming.
