Confederate Veterans Memorial of Mills County
Goldthwaite, Mills County · Texas
Erected 1964
Few men from what became Mills County joined the Confederate Army, because their own frontier needed defending against raids and outlaws. During the war and for decades after, settlers had more trouble from rustlers, horse thieves, deserters and other outlaws than from Indians. In 1905 Goldthwaite hosted the annual Confederate Reunion, the largest public gathering in Mills County history. The county itself was not created until 1887, from parts of Brown, Comanche, Hamilton and Lampasas counties.
