Coal, Oil, and Natural Gas

Roosevelt County · Montana

The basin this panel describes first paid off in Montana on the Fort Peck Reservation, about thirty miles west. Murphy Corporation's East Poplar Unit No. 1 was completed on March 12, 1952, drilled past nine thousand feet and producing from the Madison limestone. Lease brokers and royalty buyers roamed the county. By the end of 1954 the field had fifty-three producing wells, and in most of that year more than one barrel in five of Montana's oil came from it. By 1995 the rocks under the reservation had yielded some 83 million barrels.
