City of George West
George West, Live Oak County · Texas
Erected 1967
George West's records begin with the track. The San Antonio, Uvalde and Gulf laid its rails in 1913, and the town was recorded in the county clerk's office on September 22, 1914, the same year its first church service was held in an office building. County voters chose to move the seat from Oakville in 1918, and George West took it in 1919. The railroad pulled people toward new towns, among them Kitty West, Ike West, Three Rivers and Mikeska, and away from Ramireña, Lagarto and Oakville. Its first public school opened in 1912.
