Charley's World of Lost Art

Andrade, Imperial County · California

Doctors gave Charles Kasling months in 1947 unless he moved somewhere hot and dry. He got thirty-eight years. He settled near Andrade in 1960, started carving in 1967, and covered two and a half acres with figures out of rock and concrete: biblical scenes, animals, miniature towns, whatever the desert handed him. He lived on the site and is buried near it. The sculptures are rubble now and there is no plaque, which makes this the landmark you cannot read on the ground.
