Center City Cemetery

Star, Mills County · Texas
Erected 1993

Center City, the town this cemetery served, had a post office, a gristmill and a school by 1874 and a church by 1880. It counted 100 people in 1885, the year the railroad passed it by, and three churches in 1910. By 1920 rural delivery from Goldthwaite had replaced its post office. In the late 1940s it had three stores and about seventy-five residents, and from 1970 through 2003 it reported fifteen. In 2003 Center City had two churches and a single business, a hardware store that also sold gas.

What the plaque says

Center City Cemetery (One half-mile southwest) The Center City Cemetery began with the burials in 1874 of Julia M. Bishop and M.E. Hughes, the adult and infant daughters of W.C. and Caroline Hughes, early settlers of this area. Judge L.E. Patterson purchased 2.5 acres containing the Hughes burials in 1905 for use as a community graveyard. Concern for its upkeep prompted the establishment of a cemetery committee in 1951. A $1000 gift to the cemetery in J.M. Dalton's will in 1967 helped establish a maintenance fund. The more than 500 burials recorded here include those of many of this area's earliest settlers. (1993)
