Cedar Mountains Wild Horse Range
Knolls, Tooele County · Utah
Erected by BLM, 1994
The wagons are long gone; the horses remain. For decades before the railroad, emigrants bound for California crossed this hard country west of the Great Salt Lake — among them the Donner-Reed party, who lost precious days here before their disaster in the Sierra. Today the same desert belongs to wild horses. A herd of mustangs ranges free across the Cedar Mountains, descended from stock that slipped loose from ranches and cavalry over the years, now protected on this range. They water at the same scarce springs the pioneers once fought to reach, and they answer to no one.
What the plaque says
Between 1820 and 1860, explorers and settlers followed a route to California which passed this site. One group, the Donner-Reed party, inched their way through rugged Hastings Pass only to face tragedy in the High Sierras. Now wild horses follow in their footprints as they range the Cedar Mountains.
