Canadian River Canyon

Roy, Mora County · New Mexico

The gorge below this panel deepens downstream, to almost a thousand feet at Mills Canyon by the Forest Service's measure. Farther south, in side canyons running to the river, Congress designated the Sabinoso Wilderness in 2009: about sixteen thousand acres of public land with no public road in. It stayed landlocked until 2017, when the Wilderness Land Trust bought the neighboring Rimrock Rose Ranch and gave it to the Bureau of Land Management, opening a way in near Trujillo. A gift of the Cañón Ciruela lands in 2021 added nearly ten thousand acres.
