Callahan City Cemetery
Baird vicinity, Callahan County · Texas
Erected 1967
The plaque speaks of the era of great early ranches; the Handbook of Texas names some of them. In 1874 Jasper McCoy set up a ranch on Pecan Bayou, and the Merchant brothers and Dr. J. D. Windham also ranched in the county. Cattle drives passed through as well. The Western Trail to Dodge City ran up the Pecan Bayou valley and past the Bar-be-cue Ranch east of the later site of Baird. The Jacksboro Echo estimated that 73,000 head moved up it in the first part of 1876 alone, and by 1880 the yearly count passed 260,000.
