California Standard Oil Well 1

Nothing dramatic happened here, which is roughly the point. The well came in during 1899 and pumped about a hundred and fifty barrels a day through its first six months, a respectable rate and nothing more. It was still producing in April 1929. Thirty years is a long working life for a hole in the ground, and the state listed this one in 1941 for that. Nothing cast marks the site, and nothing is standing there now. The field it opened sits on tar seeps people had used for thousands of years.
