Butterfield Overland Mail in Missouri - 1858-1861 (Elkton)

Hickory County · Missouri
Erected by State Historical Society of Missouri, 1958

What passed Yoast's station was not always a stagecoach. Butterfield ordered 100 vehicles from J. S. and E. A. Abbot of Concord, New Hampshire: about 34 Concord mail coaches, each carrying six to nine passengers, and about 66 lighter celerity wagons, partly of Butterfield's own design, for the rougher frontier. Teams were four horses, the allotment all along the line from Tipton, as an 1858 passenger put it. The coaches did not stop for the night, so passengers slept aboard, and many of the drivers came from upstate New York.
