"Buckskin" Frank Leslie & Luke Short
Tombstone — 22 & 26, Cochise County County · Arizona
Two of Tombstone's deadlier reputations were made on this ground. In February 1881, the gambler Luke Short shot and killed Charlie Storms after a quarrel at the gaming tables. Twenty months later, "Buckskin Frank" Leslie killed Billy Claiborne — a hanger-on of the cowboy faction that had lost the O.K. Corral fight the year before. Neither killing became as famous as the Earp-Clanton gunfight, but together they measure how quickly an argument in a silver boomtown could end at the wrong end of a pistol.
