Borden County
Gail, Borden County · Texas
Erected 1936
Borden's Texas career ranged far from this county. He helped lay out the site of Houston in 1836 and became the Republic's first collector of the port of Galveston, and as agent of the Galveston City Company he helped sell 2,500 lots; he even devised a "locomotive bath house" for women bathing in the Gulf. In 1849 he perfected a meat biscuit of dehydrated meat and flour that left him deeply in debt. In his last Texas winters he built a freedmen's school and helped build five churches. He died at Borden, Texas, on January 11, 1874.
