The panel's miners are all one kind. In the 1870s Chinese miners outnumbered whites two to one in the Swauk Mining District, the first organized in Washington Territory, which took in both sides of this pass along Peshastin and Swauk creeks, and a main reason for drawing district rules at all was to shut them out. What survives beside the creek is older than the town's name: a stone arrastra cut into the bedrock, a Spanish-American ore mill carried north by California miners, worked from the 1860s until at least 1880 and listed on the National Register in 1974.
