Becker Butte Lookout
Salt River Canyon, Gila County County · Arizona
US-60 tips over the rim here and winds down into the Salt River Canyon, a red-and-gray gorge that earns its nickname as a smaller Grand Canyon. The river below is a boundary: Fort Apache land to the north, San Carlos Apache land to the south, two Western Apache nations divided by the water. The lookout honors Gustav Becker, the Springerville merchant who spent decades badgering the state into building this road. Stop at the pullout. The view does the rest.
