Historical Marker · No. 636
Bangor
Walworth County · South Dakota
Erected by the Selby Commercial Club, 1950
The granite's tally of five moves leaves out what settled them. When the Milwaukee Road built west about 1900 it passed Bangor by and founded Selby on its line, a few miles north, and the two towns traded the county seat back and forth for years. South Dakota Magazine and the county courthouse histories date the records' final move to Selby in 1908, a year before the stone's date; a whole block was set aside there, and the brick courthouse finished in 1911 still serves. Bangor's buildings followed the records north, and a small cemetery remains.
