At this site was the camp of the Army of the Republic of Texas
Flint, Smith County · Texas
Erected 1936
Before the armies met in July 1839, the Cherokees had a treaty. Sam Houston and John Forbes signed it on February 23, 1836, giving them land between the Angelina and Sabine rivers, but the Texas Senate tabled it and declared it void in 1837. In May 1839 a letter found with Manuel Flores led President Lamar to decide on expulsion. The Handbook of Texas says a commission met the Cherokees on July 12; they agreed to leave but refused to sign a treaty with an armed-escort clause. On July 15 the commissioners warned the army would march at once.
