Aransas County
Rockport, Aransas County · Texas
Erected 1936
Before there was a county there was a fight over who owned it. Power and Hewetson had bought twenty-two leagues beyond their colony grant, making them the largest landowners east of the Nueces, but in 1839 Joseph F. Smith and others claimed the Mexican grants were void. In 1845 the courts overturned the original grants, and by the late 1850s the empresarios had lost every title. The cattle boom made Rockport the Refugio County seat in March 1871, and the new county's commissioners first met on March 26, 1872, in a rented frame house.
