Action at Fitzhugh's Woods
Augusta, Woodruff County · Arkansas
Erected 2013
The Union colonel who led this April 1864 expedition, Christopher C. Andrews, had gone to war as a Minnesota private. Born in New Hampshire in 1829, he rose to captain in the 3rd Minnesota Infantry, was captured in Tennessee in July 1862 and exchanged that October. His work with Arkansas Unionists and his command near Augusta earned him a brigadier general's star. Afterward he served as U.S. minister to Sweden and Norway for eight years and as consul-general to Brazil. In old age he pressed Minnesota for forest protection after the Hinckley fire. He died in 1922.
