Vermilion Cliffs National Monument
Marble Canyon, Coconino County County · Arizona
Vermilion Cliffs National Monument spreads north and west of here, established in 2000 to protect the Paria Plateau and the multicolored walls that give it its name, layered shale and sandstone rising fifteen hundred feet. John Wesley Powell named these cliffs in 1869. The monument shelters a rich desert ecology, including California condors, the continent's largest land birds, brought back from near-extinction and released here beginning in 1996. Their reintroduced flock now rides the thermals above the Paria, a rare recovery written into an isolated and spectacular landscape.
