The Battle of Hurricane Creek
Bryant, Saline County · Arkansas
Erected 1976
The Encyclopedia of Arkansas files this as a skirmish at Hunter's Crossing, two miles south of Bryant, on October 23, 1864. Major George Avery's Union cavalry rode from Little Rock to raid Princeton for stored weapons and found few. Colonel John Logan's Confederates ambushed them at the creek and withdrew after about 45 minutes. Avery reported 27 Confederate dead, a number the entry finds puzzling for an ambush, and Logan accused the Union side of executing wounded and captured men. Six stones in Bryant Cemetery mark unknown Confederates; only William Anderson Penn of the Second Texas Cavalry is identified.
