Jacob Isaacson
Nogales, Santa Cruz County County · Arizona
The border city began as Jacob Isaacson's trading post. A pioneer settler, he became the first postmaster of a place that briefly bore his own name, Isaacson, Arizona, until it was renamed Nogales, Spanish for the walnut trees at this pass through the hills, on June 4, 1883. From that single store at the boundary line grew the twin cities of Nogales, Arizona, and Nogales, Sonora, which face each other across the international fence to this day. A whole border crossing traceable to one frontier counter.
