Hampton M. Roach
Lake Charles, Calcasieu County · Louisiana
Erected 1998
Hampton Roach was born in Concord, Louisiana, and served as a corporal in Company F of the 5th Cavalry. From September 29 to October 5, 1879, Ute warriors pinned Major Thomas Thornburgh's column down at Milk Creek, Colorado, a fight that grew out of settlers' pressure to remove the White River Utes and Agent Nathan Meeker's farming demands. Roach built breastworks under fire and kept the command supplied with water on three consecutive nights. Eleven soldiers received the Medal of Honor for the siege, his issued on January 27, 1880.
