Cowles Consolidated School

Webster County · Nebraska
Erected by Cowles Alumni & Community; Nebraska State Historical Society

Cowles took its name from W. D. Cowles, general freight agent of the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad, when the line came through and the town was platted in 1878. The schoolhouse was built for a town near its height: the census counted 220 people in 1920, the year of the first twelfth-grade class, and 224 in 1930. By 1950 there were 130. The school closed in 1959, the 1960 census found 55, and the post office closed that year. In 2020 Cowles had 21 residents.
