Colorado School of Mines

Golden, Jefferson County · Colorado
Erected by State Historical Society of Colorado, William A. Braiden Foundation and Mount Lookout Chapter, D.A.R., 1949

This bronze stands where few can read it, inside the fence of the state's youth corrections campus on Lookout Mountain. Bishop George Randall's Episcopal college here had three halls. The 1869 windstorm the plaque gives to the mines building flattened Jarvis Hall; the school of mines got its own building beside it in 1871. When Jarvis and Mathews halls burned in April 1878, the mines school moved into Golden. In 1881 the state took the old grounds for its Industrial School for Boys, a reform school for boys aged seven to sixteen.
