Central Platte Valley
Dawson County · Nebraska
Andreas's 1882 history calls Daniel Freeman the pioneer settler of Dawson County. He had kept a ranch on the overland route since 1861 and, after the railroad came, moved to Plum Creek station and opened a small store. The county's first election, on July 11, 1871, was held in that store, when the whole population was put at no more than forty, and Freeman was chosen clerk. He gave the oration at the county's first Fourth of July in 1872 and started the Dawson County Pioneer, first issued on November 20, 1873.
