Barnes Reserve Cemetery
Madison County · Nebraska
Erected by The Barnes Reserve Cemetery Association
H. M. Barnes and his sons Frank W. and William J. made the first settlement here, wrote A. T. Andreas in 1882, the family having come to Columbus in the spring of 1866. Andreas credits H. M. Barnes with the first frame house in Madison, in May 1867. Frank built the first log house in the fall of 1868, entered the 160 acres the town stands on and laid it out in 1870. His marriage to Phebe Bauch on May 2, 1871 was the first here. Madison became county seat on October 12, 1875.
What the plaque says
Barnes Reserve Cemetery This hallowed ground is the final resting place for many early settlers of Madison. Founded in 1874, it was used until early 1900. Here lie Madison's founder, Henry Mitchell Barnes, first generation Americans, Civil War veterans, pioneers, and many children who didn't survive to adulthood because of primitive medical care. This marker is a tribute to people of all walks of life who made sacri- fices and endured hardships of pioneer days that future generations might remember their heritage.
