Baca Home
Springerville — 22, Apache County County · Arizona
Round Valley was not settled by Mormon pioneers alone. In 1907 Gregorio Baca bought this thick-walled adobe for his bride, Chona Ortega, joining two prominent Hispano families whose herds of cattle and sheep ranged across Concho, St. Johns, and the valley. The Bacas and Ortegas were landed ranchers in a region often told as an Anglo and Mormon story, and their sixteen-inch adobe walls carry an older Southwestern building tradition brought north from New Mexico. The house anchors the Hispanic thread that runs through Springerville's history.
