Adolphus W. Greely
Lake Charles, Calcasieu County · Louisiana
Erected 1998
Adolphus Greely's Louisiana years came early. As a young Army officer he took part in the occupation of New Orleans from 1865 to 1867. In 1881 he was named to command the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition into the Arctic, and when rescuers reached his starving party on June 22, 1884, most of its 25 men had died. President Cleveland appointed him Chief Signal Officer in March 1887. He received the Medal of Honor in 1935, honored, in Wikipedia's words, for "his life of splendid public service."
