Cotton Plant, Woodruff County · Arkansas
Erected 2011
Charles Hovey, the Union colonel who rallied his men at Hill's Plantation in July 1862, was a teacher before he was a soldier. Born in Vermont in 1827, he graduated from Dartmouth, edited the Illinois Teacher and in 1857 became the first principal of Illinois State Normal University. He raised the 33rd Illinois in 1861. His brigadier general's appointment was never confirmed by the Senate and lapsed in 1863. Wounded in both arms at Arkansas Post, he resigned that May, was brevetted major general at war's end, and is buried at Arlington.
