Benton, Saline County · Arkansas
Erected 2015
After the surrender at Island No. 10 on April 8, 1862, the Eleventh Arkansas was held at Camp Douglas and Camp Butler in Illinois and Johnson's Island in Ohio, then paroled and exchanged at Vicksburg. In March 1863 it was merged with the Seventeenth Arkansas and mounted. The men tried to stop Grierson's raid, fought in the Port Hudson campaign, where they captured Union brigadier general Neal Dow, and in April 1864 a detachment burned the gunboat Petrel near Yazoo City. On January 2, 1865, they clashed with the Third U.S. Colored Cavalry, and the department surrendered in May.
